The Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, sees many Thai-Chinese impaling themselves with everything from umbrellas to swords, fire walking on hot coals, and even tying firecrackers to themselves and letting them explode without flinching. In another sign of faithfulness, the participants of the nine-day festival also slash their tongues while in a trance-like state.

In the same way the celebration begins on the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Devotees also abstain from eating meat during the carnival and chant prayers together. Which is known as the Ritual Vegetarianism in Thailand. The annual festival begins on the first evening of the ninth lunar month and lasts for nine days. Participants in the festival perform acts of body piercing as a means of shifting evil spirits from individuals onto themselves and bring the community good luck. The ritualized mutilation is performed at a local Buddhist shrine under a trance-like state and is careful supervised.

While the modern incarnation of the festival still retains many of the original practices, the most famous spectacle, is the invocation of the god Lam Tao. Those who channel the deity are bestowed great abilities to withstand personal pain and mutilation. They use this power to inflict very grievous bodily harm upon to themselves, which they shoulder in order to lessen the suffering of those around them.
